CHAPTER SIX

‘DADDY, this is great! Can I get on that train now? I want to go in the front near the driver, I want to see him drive the train, I want…’

Archie bounced up and down in front of Denovan and Kerry, his cheeks pink, and eyes sparkling with excitement behind their owlish glasses. It was just the day for an outing, thought Kerry—warm sun, jolly crowds, and the pleasure of taking out a little boy to enjoy himself in a country theme park.

‘OK, Archie,’ said Denovan, laughing at the little boy’s elation. ‘Give the train a chance to stop at the platform.’ He looked round at the little mock station and nodded in a satisfied way. ‘This is just how it was when I was young,’ he remarked. ‘Actually, it’s better than it was then, because I think they’ve made more of the scenery. They used to have a part that went through a wild wood with animated tigers and lions in it. I wonder if they’ve still got that?’

Kerry flicked an amused glance at him. He was nearly as excited as his son!

‘Brings back happy memories, does it?’ she asked.

‘My mother used to bring me here when I was little—I thought it was heaven!’

The briefest shadow crossed his face, then he put a hand out to prevent Archie from running towards the miniature train as it came to a halt and disgorged its small passengers with their parents. It had several open carriages, and the little boy grabbed Denovan’s and Kerry’s hands.

‘Come on,’ he urged, pulling them with him. ‘Let’s get in now at the front.’

The driver turned round and smiled at them. ‘Does the young man want to sit with me?’ he asked. ‘It’s first come, first served, and it means he can ring the bell. Mum and Dad will have to sit behind us, I’m afraid, as there’s only room for one beside me!’

Denovan eyes twinkled at Kerry. ‘There you are, Mum! That’s your role for the day.’

‘I’ll try and keep you both in order, then.’ She smiled, a faint blush of embarrassment on her cheeks.

A look of bliss suffused Archie’s face as he scrambled up beside the driver, and sat proudly very upright, holding on to the bell until told to pull it. He turned round and beamed at his father, informing him, ‘I’m going to start it off!’

‘That’s made his day.’ Denovan grinned. He turned to Kerry. ‘Come on, you’ll have to get in beside me. I can’t wait to go down memory lane!’

Kerry squashed in, jammed tight against Denovan’s muscular thighs. The small carriage hadn’t really been constructed with men the size of Denovan in mind.

She pushed herself into a corner as much as she could, pulling her legs to one side and trying to relax against the rather uncomfortable wooden slats of the seat, determined to try and keep her distance. Denovan had made it clear that this was to be a social outing, an afternoon for fun and entertaining Archie, and
